BE INVOLVED -TAKE ACTION

If we want to control the way our communities develop, we have to be involved in the OCP Review process. Here's what you can do:

  • stay informed - read the Regional Growth Strategy, the Nanaimo and RDN Official Community Plans, and scrutinize development proposals. (Click on the "development proposal" link to see the huge area involved and get access to the proposal).

  • be involved - sign up for our e-news service - see the right sidebar link. Get involved and help ensure others are aware and involved.

  • be seen - attend every OCP meeting (see sidebar on this site and watch newspapers) - both City of Nanaimo meetings and Area A meetings.

  • be heard - respond to the invitation to comment on the OCP reviews, write letters to your MP, MLA, city councilors, RDN directors, Plan Nanaimo Committee members, and the media. It's best to write your own letters, but you are welcome to use our "Write a Letter" page.

  • Make groups and individuals from Nanaimo that might be concerned aware of what's happening and ask them to get on our mailing list to stay informed.

City of Nanaimo Councilors decide what happens with this proposal because the land falls within city boundaries. That means the people who are most affected - that is, Cedar/Yellowpoint resident - cannot call these decision-makers to account. This is wrong - and it makes this a difficult issue to deal with.

WHO ARE WE?

SOS Nanaimo is a group of Regional District of Nanaimo citizens who are banding together to:

  • protect Cable Bay trail from becoming part of an exclusive time-share resort for non-residents
  • prevent unsustainable urban sprawl into our rural community
  • uphold our democratically- created Regional Growth Strategy

We are committed to keeping the rural character of the trail and surrounding area.

We work with other groups fighting similar issues and seeking to defend our local growth strategy from outside, self-interested developers.
